Day 2: In My Little Black Dress

Posted on | August 2, 2009

What is The Little Black Dress Experiment all about? Read the introduction here.

If you are shopping for budget priced trend looks, I highly suggest that you check out the styles offered at your local Target. The company brings in a few high-end designers each season to create a line at a budget price. You’ll find many of the pieces are perfect for your trend collection. I tend to pick up my style pieces and basic tees here.  The price point is so low if I lose interest or damage the piece there’s no crying over spilt milk. PS Be sure to check out their sale racks, they change their merchandise so frequently I can’t tell you how many times I have found great pieces marked to 75% off.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: What stores do visit when you are looking for budget priced trend looks?

LOCATION OF THE DAY: Chick Singer Night at House of Blues

THE DRESS: “The Valerie Shift” designed by Elli Grace. Black cowl neck, sleeveless, knit dress.

WHERE TO BUY:  Available online, beginning August 7, at

PRICE: $150

MODEL: Deco Glamour

WHERE TO BUY: Available at MICHELE retailers include Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and

PRICE: $3,295 Deco Glamour Diamond with Stainless Diamond Bracelet

ABOUT THE PIECE: The Deco style is one of the top seller’s for MICHELE. The Deco Glamour just seems like a perfect match for me, right? Bringing together two of my favorites MICHELE & Glamour. This month I’ll be pairing this watch head with a variety of straps from my strap wardrobe to showcase how changing the strap on your watch can change not just the look of the watch but often the look of the outfit as well.

ABOUT THE PIECE: Steel grey crystal adorned, leather soled thong-style sandals. I picked up this great pair of sandals at Kitson on Robertson back in fall of 2007, for $148.

BELT: Kemestry

ABOUT THE PIECE: Just picked this charcoal grey soft weathered leather belt up over the weekend. I am always on the lookout for versatile belts and this charcoal grey one will certainly work well for me this Fall. You can purchase this belt at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale for $28.90, MSRP $58.00.

WRAP: Exhilaration

ABOUT THE PIECE: This light blue wrap is so comfortable and flexible. I wore it last month when traveling to NYC and it was perfect. I picked this up back in June at Target for $6.24, MSRP $24.95. Even at regular price this was a steal.

EARRINGS: Classic cubic zirconia teardrops by Nordstrom

ABOUT THE PIECE: I believe every woman should have at least one pair of basic CZ or diamond stud earrings. I am too afraid of losing an earring to wear real diamonds but either way this look is very classic and worth investing in. The standard shapes available include round, princess (square), emerald (rectangle) and pear/teardrop shape. Today I selected to wear the pear shaped earrings that are one of my classic go-to pieces. I purchase these earrings in the Spring of 2008 at Nordstrom NorthPark (while gift shopping for someone else…haha) for about $75.

RING: Sterling silver ring set with raw sapphire

ABOUT THE PIECE: A fun online purchase. I bought this raw cut Indian blue sapphire ring on eBay back in 2005. It is a funky unfinished piece set in a very roughly finished silver setting. This piece is unique and gets a lot of interest when I wear it.

ABOUT THE PIECE: This great Gucci handbag is from the current collection and since it was a gift the price couldn’t be better;-) The grey Lucy clutch is available at boutiques nationwide and online at, MSRP $830.

Though I had a few outfits in mind for the week already I decided to pick out a new outfit this morning and that was inspired by one thing, the need for flat shoes. I have to say my calves were a bit sore (read: dying in pain) from the heels I had on yesterday and I decided I’d give them a reprieve today since the events of the day would be very laid back.

After spending the day relaxing with family I met up with friends at Chick Singer Night at the House of Blues to see my friend Brianna perform. She was great by the way. Upon arriving at HOB we somehow scored the last parking spot in the little lot out front. I guess that was a perk of actually arriving early. As anyone who knows me knows I rarely (read: hardly ever, almost never) am early. Not sure how that happened, I must have had the time wrong. Kidding, I was making up for last time Brianna performed when I slept through the first half of the show and barely made it before it ended. Ooops!  We headed inside to find the place overflowing with fans and zero available seats. Guess we weren’t that early. After a few minutes we spotted 18 inches of empty couch. Caroline went to see if we could squeeze in and the next thing I know the couch is empty. Well empty except for Caroline who said the other guests said they were just leaving. Hmmm. So there we were with a couch for the five of us, a table for our food and a direct view of the stage. Our neighbors went to the trouble of chasing down a waiter so we took advantage of our good fortune and ordered our food.

We noticed two of our neighbors were sporting, what else, MICHELE watches. One had a gold diamond CSX 36 with my favorite white quilted strap and the other was sporting a collectible (read: you can’t get it anymore) Deco. Did you know the CSX is named after a train in Florida? My brain is just full of fun trivia. We got to chat about the MICHELE line and I was able to show Jan (the lovely CSX owner) how to swap out the straps so now she’ll be able to put her alternate straps into rotation.

Our appetizers soon appeared and we chatted and enjoyed the show for nearly two hours before we realized our dinners must have gotten lost. After tracking down the server and assuring him our food really never came out we were greeted by a friendly manager who said she would get our food out asap. I must say she delivered on the food and as a bonus, she took care of the bill for all five of us. Seriously? Props to House of Blues.

Caroline says my Little Black Dress is lucky, maybe it is?

I love the LBD – its a staple and so easy to customize to any situation, setting, social event and special occasion! Just add a signature necklace and you’re set! A fabulous and unique necklace can also dress up a basic white tee!

Affordable trendy items can be found very often at Ross’. You have to do some looking, but there are some hidden treasures, many times by pretty good designers. TJ Maxx is another good place to snag some real treasures, you may even come across a Badgley Mischka dress. But even Target and Walmart have surprisingly trendy, cute things. It’s gotten much easier to look trendy without breaking the bank.

Love your advice on not spending much on trendy pieces. This keeps more classics in your wardrobe to play with.
