Day 24: In My Little Black Dress
LOOK OF THE DAY
What is “The Little Black Dress Experiment” all about? Read the introduction here.
TIP OF THE DAY
Before buying any of the Fall trend pieces check your closet, your friends’ closets, your mom’s closet to see if you can find any similar pieces you can work into this season’s looks. In my outfit the main piece is an animal print (HFF…hot for Fall) sweater/shawl/blanket/wrap thing that is so comfortable it reminds me of kindergarten naptime. I think I will wear this everyday. Kidding. I can’t say stuff like that anymore because now people starting thinking “oh sure, 30 ways to wear a blanket.” LOL. To give you the heads up, I won’t be abandoning you when The Little Black Dress Experiment is over. Starting September 1st I will be writing each day on 30 trends for Fall with a special “Live from New York Fashion Week” segment in the middle. Be sure to spread the word.
QUESTION OF THE DAY: What do you have in your closet that you’ve heard will work with a predicted Fall trend?
LOCATION OF THE DAY: My living room. Which has gotten more use this month with all the tapings than in the three years I’ve been here combined.
ABOUT THE LOOK
THE DRESS: “The Valerie Shift” designed by Elli Grace. Black cowl neck, sleeveless, knit dress.
WHERE TO BUY: Available online now at Elli Grace
PRICE: $150
WATCH: MICHELE
MODEL: Deco Glamour
WHERE TO BUY: Available at MICHELE retailers include Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Michele.com.
PRICE: $3295 Deco Glamour Diamond, $200 18mm Garnet Alligator Strap
ABOUT THE PIECE: The Deco style is one of the top seller’s for MICHELE. The Deco Glamour just seems like a perfect match for me, right? Bringing together two of my favorites MICHELE & Glamour. This month I’ll be pairing this watch head with a variety of straps from my strap wardrobe to showcase how changing the strap on your watch can change not just the look of the watch but often the look of the outfit as well. Strap is 18mm Garnet Alligator Strap.
SWEATER: Animal Print Wrap
ABOUT THE PIECE: This piece is “borrowed”…possibly permanently from my mom’s closet. Testing out this whole animal print trend. Never been one for animal print before but there’s a first time for everything I guess. IT originally came from Chico’s and was under $100.
BELT: St. John
ABOUT THE PIECE: The small white belt that transforms this dress into a top was a great find at the St. John outlet earlier this year. I paid about $25, the original price was more than $150.
SHOES: PELLE moda
ABOUT THE PIECE: Steel grey crystal adorned, leather soled thong-style sandals. I picked up this great pair of sandals at Kitson on Robertson back in fall of 2007, for $148.
EARRINGS: Classic cubic zirconia teardrops by Nordstrom
ABOUT THE PIECE: I believe every woman should have at least one pair of basic CZ or diamond stud earrings. I am too afraid of losing an earring to wear real diamonds but either way this look is very classic and worth investing in. The standard shapes available include round, princess (square), emerald (rectangle) and pear/teardrop shape. Today I selected to wear the pear shaped earrings that are one of my classic go-to pieces. I purchase these earrings in the Spring of 2008 at Nordstrom NorthPark (while gift shopping for someone else…haha) for about $75.
SUNGLASSES: Michele Miami
ABOUT THE PIECE: I am a sucker for oversized glasses and love the Michele Miami style. This style is set with real diamonds in the logos on each side. They are available in brown and black at Michele.com for $198.
HANDBAG: Michele Inez
ABOUT THE PIECE: My bag is obviously the black version but it available at Michele.com in a beautiful pearl version. Retail is $595 but if you can find any more in the black at Nordstrom it was marked down 50% off. This is the bag featured in The Dress Diaries sketch.

What comes to mind in my closet that will work with the fall trends are some hot colors and some sequined tops. Both have taken a nice hibernation in my closet but plan to reappear this fall to coordinate with the new fall trends! I think the black sequins will be fabulous with some dark jeans and a blazer and my hot colors will simply pop with whatever I pair them with!

I am seeing quite a few things in my closet that are going to work well with the fall trends this year–bling, ruffles, flowing sleeves, animal prints, and it looks like those blazers and jackets will be brought out also. I think it is going to be a fun season!
