Day 23: In My Little Black Dress

Posted on | August 23, 2009

What is “The Little Black Dress Experiment” all about? Read the introduction here.

Style is about being yourself and being comfortable. From the day we start Kindergarten we are molded and melded to be the same as everyone around us and told not to stand out. I would argue this is the worst thing you can do to a person as an individual and as a style icon. We have to feel good about ourselves to feel good about our style. I hope you’ll rediscover some of that childhood freedom you had as a four year old where you wore a poufy ballerina skirt to the grocery store (oh wait I still do that) or bright red shoes with a purple shirt. Be unique. Be original. Be you.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: What about your style is uniquely you? It can be something you lost years ago but want to find again.

LOCATION OF THE DAY: The Fountain at The Harbor at Lake Ray Hubbard….is it odd that every time I see it I feel like a little kid and want to jump in?…LOL

THE DRESS: “The Valerie Shift” designed by Elli Grace. Black cowl neck, sleeveless, knit dress.

WHERE TO BUY: Available online now at Elli Grace

PRICE: $150

MODEL: Deco Glamour

WHERE TO BUY: Available at MICHELE retailers include Neiman MarcusNordstrom and

PRICE: $3295 Deco Glamour Diamond, strap is white and gold newness available 08.25

ABOUT THE PIECE: The Deco style is one of the top seller’s for MICHELE. The Deco Glamour just seems like a perfect match for me, right? Bringing together two of my favorites MICHELE & Glamour. This month I’ll be pairing this watch head with a variety of straps from my strap wardrobe to showcase how changing the strap on your watch can change not just the look of the watch but often the look of the outfit as well. The strap is white and gold newness available 08.25

SCARF: Merona

ABOUT THE PIECE: Camel colored, cashmere feel, cotton scarf. I bought this lightweight versatile scarf for Fall receiving a similar one for Mother’s Day Gift and thinking how useful and versatile they were…not to mention, well-priced. The scarf came from Target and cost about $12.99. Target has a great selection of scarves and wraps at very affordable price points.

HANDBAG: Michele Kylie Hobo

AOUT THE PIECE: This Kylie Hobo handbag, in Cuoio (pronounced “Coy-oh”) is the focal point of Michele’s Fall collection. You will see this bag on the cover of the upcoming Bloomingdale’s catalog and certainly on the arm of many fashionable ladies on the street as well. Price is $595.

BLOUSE: Xhiliration

ABOUT THE PIECE: I love this versatile sweater top that I picked up at Target for a mere $8.98. The top is very versatile, breathable and comes in a variety of colors. Great piece for transition. (Transition is the non-season between Summer and Fall where typically you wear a pre-Fall piece or combine your Summer and Fall pieces to adjust to the current weather.)

SUNGLASSES: Michele Miami

ABOUT THE PIECE: I am a sucker for oversized glasses and love the Michele Miami style. This style is set with real diamonds in the logos on each side. They are available in brown and black at for $198.

NECKLACE: Vintage, circa 1965

ABOUT THE PIECE: My mom gave me this cool vintage necklace from her jewelry box more than a decade ago. It has a gold tone chain and a large topaz stone set in an ornate gold frame style setting. It used to have a long chain that I altered to the length it is now when long chains were out of style. As we all know everything comes back around. Anyhow, now every time she sees me wear it she wants it back. No way. Though I will agree to let her borrow it.

SHOES: Miu Miu Strappy Sabbia Sandals

ABOUT THE PIECE: I picked these shoes up at Nordstrom South Coast Plaza as a day before my birthday gift. Funny story…after trying on quite a few pairs of shoes and selecting these for their style comfort and versatility I was flabbergasted when after fifteen minutes the salesman told me he couldn’t find the other shoe, there were no more in the country and couldn’t I just find another shoe. Solution? A salesgirl. LOL. One thing I have found when shopping, you must find salespeople as motivated as you. The salesman couldn’t see why I wouldn’t just pick something else while the girl realized (as of course you will as well) that once a woman has selected a shoe, its time to find the shoe. So what happened? The girl went in the back and reappeared not two minutes later with my shoes. This is the second time I have worn them and though I don’t recommend them for long walks in the woods or a day in retail they are comfortable and certainly a great neutral footwear solution. Celebrity sighting? Lauren Conrad has these shoes. I purchase the shoes for approximately 60% off retail at $236.90, MSRP $595.

EARRINGS: Classic cubic zirconia teardrops by Nordstrom

ABOUT THE PIECE: I believe every woman should have at least one pair of basic CZ or diamond stud earrings. I am too afraid of losing an earring to wear real diamonds but either way this look is very classic and worth investing in. The standard shapes available include round, princess (square), emerald (rectangle) and pear/teardrop shape. Today I selected to wear the pear shaped earrings that are one of my classic go-to pieces. I purchase these earrings in the Spring of 2008 at Nordstrom NorthPark (while gift shopping for someone else…haha) for about $75.

RING: David Yurman

ABOUT THE PIECE: Champagne citrine 14mm set in silver/gold. From the Albion® Collection, sterling silver and 18-karat yellow gold ring with faceted and split Cable shank. Stone, 14mm x 14mm. Made in the USA of domestic and imported material. A note about David Yurman rings. Since the stones are genuine each individual stone will have it’s own unique color. Be sure to select the exact ring you want and if you are matching another piece in your collection bring it along as the colors can vary dramatically. It is not currently available online but may be available in store. This was my 30th birthday gift from my husband.

I am all about the accessories – as my friends know and love! I find it can totally make and change an outfit and I experiment with lots of different looks with my jewelry, scarves and wraps. Layers all of some of the above is fun along with mixing and matching different items.

I have never been one to want to blend in with the surroundings, and teaching at a rural school where students wear uniforms really gives me an edge. I love being on top of fashion sense, yet keeping it professional for this setting. It’s a great opportunity to inspire young ladies to keep up with fashions. I love talking to them about it, giving them ideas, and I think it makes their day a little bettter when they see me and say, “I LOVE WHAT YOU HAVE ON. WHERE DID YOU GET IT???” The glitter in their eyes is priceless.
