Day 13: In My Little Black Dress

Posted on | August 13, 2009

What is The Little Black Dress Experiment all about? Read the introduction here.

Don’t pair too many accessories around your face. If you are wearing a scarf or layered necklaces, wear small (or no) earrings to avoid having too much (yes, sadly there is something as too much) going on around your smiling noggin. Also get to know the shape of your face to know what hair style and earrings too look best on you.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: What have you found is flattering with your specific face shape? Be it hats, hairstyles, earrings, sunglasses or something else?

LOCATION OF THE DAY: Mi Cocina Highland Park Village

THE DRESS: “The Valerie Shift” designed by Elli Grace. Black cowl neck, sleeveless, knit dress.

WHERE TO BUY: Available online now at Elli Grace

PRICE: $150

MODEL: Deco Glamour

WHERE TO BUY: Available at MICHELE retailers include Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and

PRICE: $3295 Deco Glamour, with SS Diamond Strap; $2695 Deco Glamour, head only; $120 Eggplant Lizard Strap

ABOUT THE PIECE: The Deco style is one of the top seller’s for MICHELE. The Deco Glamour just seems like a perfect match for me, right? Bringing together two of my favorites, MICHELE & Glamour. This month I’ll be pairing this watch head with a variety of straps from my strap wardrobe to showcase how changing the strap on your watch can change not just the look of the watch but often the look of the outfit as well. Today I paired it will the Eggplant Lizard Strap.

MORE ABOUT THE WATCH: So many people have asked about my watch and how I was introduced to Michele. In 2006, my now-husband announced he was going to take me engagement ring shopping. On our first venture out to peruse mall jewelers for ideas we made a stop at Neiman Marcus where he bought me my first Michele, the stainless Deco. (Note: the mall jewelry store is not where I recommend you buy diamonds…if you want feedback on where to buy diamonds, platinum, gold, etc let me know…we’ll save that for a different experiment…LOL) Needless to say Michele holds a special place in my heart and I’ve been a big fan ever since. This past May, after being selected Face of Dallas by Max Factor and D Magazine, I was invited to a VIP preview party for the Michele line. I met the great team at Michele, hit it off, and have been having a great time with them ever since. Oh and yes the Michele watches (or watch heads I should say) are actually mine.

MORE ABOUT THE STRAPS: For those of you who have seen the news segments, to answer the oft-asked question…are ALL of those straps yours? Though I do have quite an array of Michele straps personally the good folks over at Michele were kind enough to lend me a sample roll of the Fall line to accessorize with my looks this month. Oddly enough I have found many Michele fans do have 20, 30 or more straps in the personal strap wardrobe. Each season Michele comes out with more looks and loyal fans add these unique styles to their strap wardrobes, which in turn keep growing☺ Kudos to Michele for such a great styling concept. SCARF: Vintage Purple Swiss Dot

ABOUT THE PIECE: I picked this fun and flirty purple Swiss dot scarf up at Buffalo Exchange for about $4. Yes Buffalo Exchange is like a home away from home.

SHOES: Moschino

ABOUT THE PIECE: Moschino is one of my favorite footwear designers. I have a very large foot (size 41) and not many designers make a comfortable shoe in my size. I have found after much trial and error that the peep-toe, sling back heel is my favorite style of heels and this particular design is very comfortable. I purchased this pair of hot purple Moschinos last summer at one of my favorite Dallas boutiques, 4510 (when I bought my first Marchesa…will have to tell you how much I love Marchesa designs later) for a discounted $165, the shoes not the dress.

EARRINGS: Diamond Studs

ABOUT THE PIECE: When pairing jewelry and scarves you see I often wear a very demure pair of CZ/diamond studs. As a fan of the layered necklaces and of course scarves, I recommend you don’t pair a large earring with one of the aforementioned. Though you certainly can wear a few pieces of jewelry and you can see I often do, you don’t want too much going on around your face…especially if you are being photographed. So with my layers of beads I once again opted for a simple diamond stud.

ABOUT THE PIECE: Black Fendi glasses. I picked these up from Peepers in Highland Park Village last fall. I have light blue eyes which happen to be very light sensitive. I especially can’t have light pouring in from above my eyes (not sure why) so this explains why I wear such oversized sunglasses. Yes it actually is functional not just fashionable. My favorite new sunglass designer is Michele and I am looking forward to picking up a pair of their Miami sunglasses in black. I have them in the deep pink color they had for Spring. They are a great oversized style and have that signature Jackie O look to them, I love the coverage they provide. Check out the Miami sunglasses for yourself at

NECKLACES: 3 Black Beaded Necklaces

ABOUT THE PIECE: I am actually wearing three different necklaces. The longest one with the graduated beads is a vintage replica from Nordstrom that cost about $75 last fall. The long single strand was about $18 at Target last year as well. The triple strand is a vintage piece and I picked it up for about $12 nearly 10 years ago at a flea market.

COAT: LAL, Live a Little

ABOUT THE PIECE: This vintage style coat is one of my favorite styles. I actually have quite a few vintage and modern pieces in this similar style. I am a big fan of coats (though they don’t get out much in August, in Dallas) and have quite a fun collection. I purchased it about a year ago from Loehmann’s in LA. The sad part is this coat used to have a cool sheen to it but something happened at the drycleaners (I don’t go to that cleaners anymore) and it lost the luster. Anyhow the jacket was about $60 and goes great paired with dresses, skirts, slacks, jeans…you name it, it plays well.

HANDBAG: Yves St. Laurent

ABOUT THE PIECE: I picked up this black leather Muse Two in June while in NYC for a photo shoot with Glamour. Love the versatility of the bag and the softness of the leather. This is the epitome of a classic bag. I brought it home and my husband asked if it was vintage. Paid a hugely discounted price of approximately $1200. By the way I would love to have a croc embossed solid green or grey Muse Two in the large size, if anyone every sees one somewhere, let me know.

Today has been a long, but great day. Started off the morning with the interview with the Associated Press tv crew. Fun times…though I think I was accused of being OCD. The cameraman thought it’d be hilarious to put one of my Michele watch straps back in the case backwards (read: the wrong way) from all the rest. LOL. A fun shoot and done in under two hours. I am looking forward to seeing the results.

ap-tv-interviewGetting directions on introducing my closet from the AP segment producer.

Did some web updates and tracked down the video link to the Channel 8 “Beauty on a Budget” segment that aired last night. Oh and found out they teased the story during Oprah. Nice. If only Oprah could hear the story, I’d love to make a visit to her show!!! (Wouldn’t we all though). Loved the promo I saw earlier for Jet Blue where you can buy a $599 pass to travel for a month. Maybe I could follow this month up with the Little Black Dress….30 cities in 30 days. Ha.

Got to meet up with my friend LeeAnne Locken and swapped stories over lunch at Mi Cocina, Highland Park Village, one of my favorite restaurants. Love their house salad with chili garlic dressing, watch out it will burn your tongue though. Did my pic of the day and then popped into Deno’s Shoe Repair where I realized I had some repairs waiting. I am excited to wear my pink Louboutins, I had almost forgot about (kidding.)

On the way home I did a follow up interview with the Associated Press print writer, caught up on calls with friends, reviewed a potential promo with Chi (the flat iron every woman needs) and then upon arriving home fell into bed for a quick afternoon power nap. Woke up at 9PM and realized, I must have been TIRED. Well so much for the plans for tonight but it freed me up to write and work on some future plans. Was greeted with an email from the webmaster who hosts my site who gave me the good news…more traffic equals a need for more bandwidth and the bad (but bearable under the circumstances news) that, that was going to cost more money. All in a day’s work I guess.

Oh I was asked a question today that I don’t think I have addressed….when did I think up this whole Little Black Dress Experiment??? Monday, July 27th, just days before I started the experiment. I was inspired by the styling appearance I was doing for Michele on Saturday August 1. I thought “this is great, women are always asking how to change their look. I am showing them ways to pair their watch with a variety of straps, I should show how to style an entire look for the month from a staple wardrobe piece.” I must say the last 18 days have been a whirlwind but boy have I loved being along for the ride!!! Hope you are enjoying the experiment as well!!!

For my round face I have found that I try to find accessories that offer a nice contrast to my rounded jawline. By doing that, I feel that the accessories then help to add definition to my face. My Versace sunglasses have frames with angular lines because they seem to lengthen and slim my face, versus rounded styles that accentuate fuller cheeks.

I really don’t think about what goes with what face shape–I just know things that make me pleased when I look in a mirror. I know that I always look better if my hair has fluff and a hint of the wildside on the sides. I think your hairstyle should be your first consideration. It frames your face, and everything else you do is to complement that picture. Wish I were at MiCocina with you having a Mambo Taxi and chicken nachos. Yum.

I love big earrings, but really need to watch that they are not too big to wear with my short hair.
