Day 12: In My Little Black Dress

Posted on | August 12, 2009

What is The Little Black Dress Experiment all about? Read the introduction here.

Love the look of the scarf around your hair but can’t quite get it to stay put? I picked up this navy and white hair scarf at Target for $12.99 and the magic behind it is, it is designed for the hair so it is fitted with elastic inside at the base of the neck and then still has the scarf pieces hanging down to give it the authentic look.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: What are quick fixes you’ve found for your hair when you are in a hurry.

LOCATION OF THE DAY: Hollywood Nails & Spa

THE DRESS: “The Valerie Shift” designed by Elli Grace. Black cowl neck, sleeveless, knit dress.

WHERE TO BUY: Available online now at Elli Grace

PRICE: $150

MODEL: Deco Glamour

WHERE TO BUY: Available at MICHELE retailers include Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and

PRICE: $3295 Deco Glamour, with SS Diamond Strap; $2695 Deco Glamour, head only; $120 Golden yellow snakeskin strap

ABOUT THE PIECE: The Deco style is one of the top seller’s for MICHELE. The Deco Glamour just seems like a perfect match for me, right? Bringing together two of my favorites, MICHELE & Glamour. This month I’ll be pairing this watch head with a variety of straps from my strap wardrobe to showcase how changing the strap on your watch can change not just the look of the watch but often the look of the outfit as well. Today I paired it will the Golden Yellow Snakeskin Strap.

HANDBAG: Elli Grace

ABOUT THE PIECE: This was the third day I used this handbag and I want to illustrate how a classic style and neutral color can go from day to day with very different looks and yet still coordinate perfectly. Invest in a good bag. I absolutely love this oversized white leather sloughy tote. Custom made for the new designer, Elli Grace, the leather is to die for. I think they may have one left in caramel so get it before it is gone. They are on sale now at Elli Grace $150 ,original price $250. A steal at full price, trust me.

ABOUT THE PIECE: I picked this headband up with a few others for $12.99 each. I have worn them occasionally, typically when I am either in a hurry or too tired to style my hair J The bad thing about long hair, it takes a lot more effort. The good thing about long hair, it’s long hair and I love it.

SHOES: Calvin Klein

ABOUT THE PIECE: Picked up these great navy and white shoes back in May at the Ross across from The Grove in LA. They often have great designer pieces on deep discount. This classic pair of shoes was just $31.99.

JEANS: Sevens

ABOUT THE PIECE: I bought these at Nordstrom on a lucky day when I went in and happened to find multiple pairs of jeans that fit  (I typically can’t find one pair) and all were on marked down considerably. I believe I paid $99 for this pair. These are what I call “dress jeans” because they are cut more like slacks.

BELT: St. John White leather/burnished brass wide belt

ABOUT THE PIECE: While accompanying my husband to San Antonio for business in January I got to indulge in one of my favorite past times, outlet shopping. We made a brief stop at the San Marcos outlets where I discovered a St. John outlet with Target prices. I’ll be wearing a number of pieces from that amazing shopping trip throughout the month. I picked up this very versatile belt for just $18, MSRP $145.

NECKLACE: Anthropologie

ABOUT THE PIECE: I bought this set of beads at Anthropologie last year for about $40. Adds a fun splash of color to any outfit.

I woke up to find a Tweet announcing the Valerie Shift is now available at Elli Grace. Order yours today at Elli Grace. I spent the day catching up with emails and preparing for tomorrow’s Associated Press interview. This was my last day to have Caroline here to assist me (sad face) as she is going back to school tomorrow. Was super tired today, I think all the excitement is catching up with me. I think I’ll hit up Massage Envy on Friday for a relaxing massage.

I hear I was on Channel 8’s Beauty on a Budget tonight and that it turned out great. Unfortunately my DVR didn’t want to record it for some reason. But my wonderful PR girl is beyond awesome and called me and held her phone up to the TV so I could listen to it on her Tivo. Funny but when I was a child we didn’t have TV I just had a radio that got TV channels so when the antenna was working I would listen to the TV. It was just about the same. I just imagined what the picture was. Haha. I did get to pop in and see my friends over at Hollywood nails for a touch up. When I called to make an appointment the owner answered and must have recognized my voice because he said, I just saw you on TV. So funny

Stopped by Gloria’s for dinner and had an interesting dish called a Papusa. I made sure to do my video blog today and actually did some video throughout the day preparing for tomorrow interview. I crossed something off my to do list that’s been there for a year. I finally moved in my firesafe filing cabinet. If you don’t have one, I strongly suggest you get one for your important documents in case you are ever the victim of fire. Last year I had friends whose house burned down and they lost everything. It was eye opening for sure.

Well I am going to turn in for the night and dream about what outfit(s) I’ll wear for the TV crew tomorrow. I have not decided on all of it but I am sure it will include The Little Black Dress.

The best quick fixes for my hair when I’m in a hurry are to use a product first (such as Fredric Fekkai) to revive hair and see if that will help. However, if that’s not working I use 5 minutes to style. I’ll separate my hair into a few sections on top and at the sides of your face. By next misting all sections with volumizing spray, I’ll then roll the hair up with one or two inch Velcro rollers. With a super fast blow dry with the rollers in I’ll be voluminous and hair happy in only 5 minutes!

I have really short hair that does not work with bands, scarfs, and certainly no up-dos. I like for my hair to look a little messy (the “every hair in place look” is not me), and I recently discovered a product that is wonderful. Dust It Mattifying Powder can be sprinkled on the hair and “WOW,” you can get volume, scrunch, cute hair rather than hair that looks like you should have washed it this morning. Friends have seen that it works great on long hair as well to give it volume. It is certainly a “quick fix” when you can use a product that makes your hair look great without the shampoo and water. I’m not surprised that this product got the 2008 Best New Product Award!

Love your hair pulled back with the scarf. Wish I could to that with my short hair.
