Adam Lippes Breaks Down America’s Most Stylish Blogger

Posted on | November 24, 2009

Watch as designer Adam Lippes of ADAM and StyleList’s Melissa Foss break down the bloggers looks in Week 5 in the search for America’s Most Stylish Blogger. He got two things right about my outfit…I was trying to hide the leggings and I didn’t love them. I have to admit this week was by far the toughest challenge. I discovered pairing a blue tie-dyed pant with anything is difficult. I did learn a new trick though. Put your Spanx tights on, underneath your leggings, to keep your leggings looking firm. That new discovery alone was worth styling the tie-dyed tights. VOTE for Valerie Elizabeth HERE!!!

America’s Most Stylish Blogger: The FINAL Week

Posted on | November 24, 2009

So your vote is needed, now more than ever. I am in second place and I need your votes daily- and the daily votes of everyone you know- to clinch the #1 spot by next Tuesday. CLICK HERE TO VOTE!!! After evaluating a rack of clothes that could potentially be paired with this unique Plan B legging; I decided to resurrect my famous Little Black Dress. In August, I wore this LBD for 31 days in what I called The Little Black Dress Experiment and documented the experience on my blog. My goal was to illustrate to my readers how they could take a simple piece in their wardrobe and accessorize it to create innumerable looks. In this week’s look I wanted to reaffirm that you truly can pair your little black dress with…anything.

ABSB Week 5 Pic Valerie Elizabeth 998x1842Inspired by the legging’s crushed-leather-meets-tie-dye look, I paired the outfit with a navy blue crushed-leather, on trend, motorcycle jacket. Many people ask how to pair a motorcycle jacket with an LBD? This is how. I added a belt that lends definition to my waist and a great knee-high boot to break up the pattern on my leg. Want to know the secret to getting your legs to look lean in a patterned legging? Wear SPANX “body-shaping tights” underneath your leggings. They keep your legs looking fit and in cold weather add a little warmth as well.

America’s Most Stylish Blogger: Week #4

Posted on | November 17, 2009

American style icons have sported red tartan plaid for decades; making this stylish red plaid ruffled top by Priorities a perfect Week 4 challenge item in the AOL StyleList.com & BlueFly.com search for “America’s Most Stylish Blogger.” The classic tartan plaid exudes an aristocrat feeling that for some reason always reminds me of a snowy Christmas by the fire. Granted I grew up in Southern California and normally spent my sunny Christmases barefoot, delivering homemade cookies to the neighbors…but it’s what I imagine is standard Christmas uniform for everyone in the cooler climates.

AMSB Week 4 HNGM Pic 710x1312The styling in this look is an eclectic pairing of “Conservative Prepster” meets

“Rock & Roll Party Girl”…tonight’s gonna be a good night!

I love the balance of a classic menswear plaid with the femininity of this season’s hottest ruffles. Though the pattern, reminiscent of Oxford boarding school— with it’s high collar and long sleeves— could be seen as a bit uptight, I think in this pairing you’ll find this top to be fresh and fun for women of all ages.

In this look the top is styled for a fun night out; paired with a navy velvet bubble skirt— an excellent example of how to pair black and navy in the same outfit—a wide black patent belt accentuates the waist and the pairing is accessorized with piles of black vintage beads, and a modern black satin stiletto. I added a funky, zipper-edged black patent embossed croc day to evening clutch to complete the look.

The styling in this look exemplifies the eclectic pairing of “Conservative Prepster” meets “Rock & Roll Party Girl.” I hope this look has inspired you to add a little Rock & Roll style to the prepster plaid in your wardrobe. Head out on the town in your newly styled look and remember….tonight’s gonna be a good night!!!

America’s Most Stylish Blogger: Week #3

Posted on | November 10, 2009

In just weeks, the holiday parties will be in full swing and women everywhere will spend countless hours deliberating what to wear to their upcoming events. I realize dressing for the holiday season can be overwhelming— before you feign the swine flu and decline all your invites— check out how I repurposed this hot pink Necessary Objects mini-skirt from Bluefly.com.

AMSB Week 3 240x360

My goal was to illustrate how things that you already own can be styled together to create a fun new look. I hope to encourage and inspire you to discover new ways to repurpose items in your own wardrobe for their sparkling debut— technically encore but whatever— at your next holiday get together.

In this week’s look, I repurposed a hot pink mini-skirt by Necessary Objects as a top in my holiday look. I paired it with a purple taffeta party skirt; with just a quick hemming this skirt was repurposed from its former life as a 1996 designer floor length ball skirt. The best time to add a little glitter is during the holidays, so I decided to bring in a little sparkle to my outfit. I paired a red-soled silver sequins stiletto with a striking rhinestone bauble bracelet/necklace set. As a final touch I added a funky animal print belt with a contrasting ornate gold buckle to give the outfit a little flair. My festive look is something I would wear to a fun cocktail party or maybe as my New Year’s Eve ensemble.

This outfit illustrates how a few minors changes to pieces you might already own, paired with timely trends—pop of color, a statement necklace, animal print— and a little bit of sparkle can create a festive look without any of the guilt ridden purchases. In the first challenge we received a “Boyfriend Vest” by Priorities. Check out my entry and be sure to come back each day to cast your vote for Society Stylist as America’s Most Stylish Blogger.

AMERICA’S MOST STYLISH BLOGGER: OFFICIAL WEEK 1 ENTRY

Standing in the mailroom, I excitedly tore open the package from BlueFly.com. What I found made me giggle!!! The navy blue Priorities “Boyfriend Vest” was the perfect illustration of my entire styling philosophy. I believe that by buying quality pieces, with classic styling, you can work them into your wardrobe not only this season but for years to come.  This August, I demonstrated this with “The Little Black Dress Experiment,” where I styled the same little black dress differently for thirty-one days.

Timeless “Boyfriend Vest,” styled for a modern day Jackie O. Classic style appropriate for any age & easy to create from your own wardrobe.

Why was I giggling? Well, I owned a nearly identical vest, in 1994. I didn’t call it a “Boyfriend Vest” though. I called it “part of my interview suit.” Read more
