Day 21: In My Little Black Dress

Posted on | August 21, 2009

What is “The Little Black Dress Experiment” all about? Read the introduction here.

Tonight I found some great animal print looks for Fall in my mom’s closet, that never happers. Starting next week I’ll be transitioning into “Fall” looks and was able to find some great pieces in her wardrobe.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: What is an off-beat place you found inspiration for fashion?

LOCATION OF THE DAY: At my long lost parents house (okay so they weren’t really lost but it seemed like they were gone forever)

THE DRESS: “The Valerie Shift” designed by Elli Grace. Black cowl neck, sleeveless, knit dress.

WHERE TO BUY: Available online now at Elli Grace

PRICE: $150

MODEL: Deco Glamour

WHERE TO BUY: Available at MICHELE retailers include Neiman MarcusNordstrom and

PRICE: $3,295 Deco Glamour Diamond with Green Alligator Strap, which will be available August 25.

ABOUT THE PIECE: The Deco style is one of the top seller’s for MICHELE. The Deco Glamour just seems like a perfect match for me, right? Bringing together two of my favorites MICHELE & Glamour. This month I’ll be pairing this watch head with a variety of straps from my strap wardrobe to showcase how changing the strap on your watch can change not just the look of the watch but often the look of the outfit as well. The strap is the green alligator and it will be available August 25.

SHOES: Marc Jacobs
ABOUT THE PIECE: Purchased these at a great resale boutique called Wasteland on Melrose. Great price point at $40.
HANDBAG: Michele Inez
ABOUT THE PIECE: My bag is obviously the black version but it available at in a beautiful pearl version. Retail is $595 but if you can find any more in the black at Nordstrom it was marked down 50% off. This is the bag featured in The Dress Diaries sketch.
TOP: Rubbish
ABOUT THE PIECE: I purchased this at last year’s Nordstrom Half Yearly Sale for about $9. I love this brand as the tanks are very durable. They cost about $9.00.
SUNGLASSES: Michele Miami
ABOUT THE PIECE: I am a sucker for oversized glasses and love the Michele Miami style. This style is set with real diamonds in the logos on each side. They are available in brown and black at for $198.
JEANS: Aristocrat
ABOUT THE PIECE: i picked up this pair of jeans at 4510 in Dallas. I paid about $80 for the stylish jeans.
ABOUT THE PIECE: I bought the green headed band for about $8. It has been a great lifesaver when I was too hot to wear my hair down and makes for a great pop of color.
NECKLACE: Green vintage beads
ABOUT THE PIECE: I’ve had this necklace forever. It is made of glass style beads. I bought it at a fle market in Malibu for less than $10.
NECKLACE:  Black beaded necklace
ABOUT THE PIECE:The black one with the graduated beads is a vintage replica from Nordstrom that cost about $75 last fall.
BELT: St. John
ABOUT THE PIECE: You can’t see the belt but the small white belt that transforms this dress into a top was a great find at the St. John outlet earlier this year. I paid about $25, the original price was more than $150.

Today was the first day in awhile that resembled any semblance of normalcy. After an only partially interrupted night’s sleep I really got up about 8:30 to receive the flat screen being delivered that came “free with car.” Don’t you love those promotions…you buy a car and then you never see the tv for months. Anyhow it will make a great monitor for my new office so I am thrilled it finally arrived.

I had to catch up on endless emails and begin reviewing offers to endorse X or give a presentation at X or loan my name to X…LOL. Lots of fun opportunities!!! For any emails I haven’t gotten back to yet, give me a few days I am working through them.  I also had to ship a ton of client merchandise that had sold during the week and I know the buyers were anxiously awaiting the arrival of their “new-to-them” designer goods. We are considering adding a resale shopping section to the site to allow followers to buy client merchandise. Would love to get feedback on the interest level. While at the post office we picked up some fun gifts from The Vintage Scarf and Eden’s Bloom. Be sure to check out our upcoming looks to see their products on display.

I did indulge in both lunch and dinner, seated…and not in the car…which was a nice change of pace. I’ve been working on “Media” section to the site as well as we’ve found the media folks are going to the site and pulling down the los res daily pics to put on their newscasts. Hopefully this new section will be ready to go by Monday AM. Looks like next week I’ll be on the radio circuit, was booked for a show in California and one in New York for the beginning of the week.

I have been so excited to hear the comments, tips, suggestions and feedback from all of you who have been following the story and even those who have just joined in. I can’t believe there are only ten days to go. Be sure to check back for more interesting updates…including a big announcement!!!

The most off-beat place I find fashion inspiration is in some of the youthful, trendy stores. For young people, this is the place they would expect to find their fashions, but for a more mature person, these shops can be a way to stimulate your thoughts. You can carefully choose some ideas that can be incorporated into your fashion scheme in a classy way.

I am happy to hear animal prints are really in this year. They never seemed out to me. I always have an animal print piece in my closet.
