Day 20: In My Little Black Dress

Posted on | August 20, 2009

What is “The Little Black Dress Experiment” all about? Read the introduction here.

If you really love something you see in a magazine or store but you don’t feel comfortable purchasing it at the asking price, tear out the advertisement or take a picture of it on your phone to remember it. I cannot tell you how many times I have been able to go back and buy an item at 70% or more off. Also copy down the store tag information so when they have their next sale you can ask a salesperson to track the item down for you in one of their other stores.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: Have you ever bookmarked or photographed something that you were later able to buy at a discount? What are your favorite items you waited patiently for?

LOCATION OF THE DAY: Victory Park at Good Morning Texas Studios

THE DRESS: “The Valerie Shift” designed by Elli Grace. Black cowl neck, sleeveless, knit dress.

WHERE TO BUY: Available online now at Elli Grace

PRICE: $150

MODEL: Deco Glamour

WHERE TO BUY: Available at MICHELE retailers include Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and

PRICE: $3,295 Deco Glamour Diamond with MW Pattern Gold Strap, which will be available August 25.

ABOUT THE PIECE: The Deco style is one of the top seller’s for MICHELE. The Deco Glamour just seems like a perfect match for me, right? Bringing together two of my favorites MICHELE & Glamour. This month I’ll be pairing this watch head with a variety of straps from my strap wardrobe to showcase how changing the strap on your watch can change not just the look of the watch but often the look of the outfit as well. The strap is MW pattern gold and it will be available August 25.

ABOUT THE PIECE: I purchased this linen/cotton jacket back in August of 2008 when I was in Los Angeles shopping for Fashion Week. I bought it at a great shop on Melrose that carried many fresh designer lines and great price points. I liked the jacket as soon as I saw it for the interesting lines and draping but as soon as I belted it I new it was going home with me. It is a very comfortable/versatile piece and in the front has two pockets that could hold more than most clutches without you ever being the wiser. I paid about $40.

BRACELET/EARRINGS: Funky Muted Jewels set in Gold Hardware

ABOUT THE PIECE: I purchased this great set at a shop in West Village, in October 2008. The price wasn’t the best I’ve ever paid but the quality is very good, they coordinate well with quite a few pieces in my wardrobe and I always get compliments on them when I when them.

SHOES: Miu Miu

ABOUT THE PIECE: I saw these shoes at Barney’s at the Grove over Labor Day weekend last year. I saved a camera phone picture of the shoe thinking I would check back later in the season. In late October a friend clued me in to an unpublished pre-sale at Barney’s where I stopped in and was able to pick these up for 60% off.

ABOUT THE PIECE: This great Gucci handbag is from the current collection and since it was a gift the price couldn’t be better;-) The grey Lucy clutch is available at boutiques nationwide and online at, MSRP $830.

BELT: Kemestry

ABOUT THE PIECE: Picked this charcoal grey soft weathered leather belt up earlier this month. I am always on the lookout for versatile belts and this charcoal grey one will certainly work well for me this Fall. You can purchase this belt at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale for $28.90, MSRP $58.00.

So another early day again, up at 5AM to post my blog before the morning show on Good Morning Texas. Met Tom Wilson while I was there, you might know him as Biff from Back to the Future.

They had a fun band perform throughout the show and the chef from Market Street was the cooking, unfortunately I didn’t get to sample any of the yummy smelling food.

Great segment with LeeAnne Locken.

On the way home I had a few strategy phone calls and confirmed the “Take Off the Dress” party will be August 28 at Elli Grace, more details will follow. I then met my parents, who just returned from traveling, for breakfast to fill them in on my crazy week and then headed home to attack the backlog of emails and take a much-needed nap. After two and a half hours of rest I was back up and did a little paperwork before heading out to Northpark.

Yesterday evening I attended the Fall fashion preview at Neiman Marcus, coordinated by my friend Susan for the United Way Women’s Leadership Council. A great group of charitable business savvy women descended upon the Northpark store to see what would be hot for Fall. Be sure to check out our diary for the trend report. There was also a presentation by Bvlgari skin care and they sent us home with a great swag bag with $170 worth of Bvlgari product. (Thanks Bvlgari & Neimans.) The models were familiar faces from Kim Dawson and the styles included a great red Stella McCartney clutch that one guest went home with. The drawing also included a lunch with one of the top donors from the United Way and I was lucky enough to get my name selected for that prize. It will be interesting to see what becomes of that luncheon.

After finishing at the fashion show I met a friend from Michele to pick up some giveaways and have a nice dinner at La Duni. Wow, have you tried their Tres Leche cake? I could only have a couple bites, it was so rich, but it was delicious.

I returned home and spent some time reviewing the project pictures and as I looked back through the daily pictures today I realized, WOW I have been doing this for TWENTY days. Crazy!!!  Next week we’ll be posting a poll where you can vote on your favorite look. Three of those looks will be available for viewing at the “Take Off the Dress” party.

My patience is good while waiting for Tory Burch items to go on sale, yet sometimes I have to buy the item that I am drooling over in the moment! Her site has good sales along with being a part of “Shop It To Me” that highlights weekly sales of the designers you choose. I often cut out pictures from magazines of looks or items I admire to find a similar item at a discount. These photographs help me log all of the ideas, the trends and the styles so I can easily call upon them when I’m out shopping.

I am not a very patient person, but I had to have some patience to get the black Prada handbag I wanted. I waited, and then found just the one I was wanting at one of my favorite stores, the Bargain Box in Longview, and at the perfect time for Christmas. I love picking out my own Christmas presents!
