Day 5: In My Little Black Dress

Posted on | August 5, 2009

What is The Little Black Dress Experiment all about? Read the introduction here.

If you attend charity functions check out the silent auctions. You can often score great deals and support your favorite charities at the same time. I often pick up gift certificates for places I would go anyhow and have bought so many things at charity auctions including jewelry, clothes, handbags, trips, even bath towels…often for 50% or more off retail. Check out my handbag of the day to read more about one of my favorite deals.

QUESTION OF THE DAY:  Have you ever gotten an amazing deal in a charity auction?

LOCATION OF THE DAY: The Ashton (my favorite former home)

THE DRESS: “The Valerie Shift” designed by Elli Grace. Black cowl neck, sleeveless, knit dress.

WHERE TO BUY:  Available online, beginning August 7, at

PRICE: $150

MODEL: Deco Glamour

WHERE TO BUY: Available at MICHELE retailers include Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and

PRICE: $3295 Deco Glamour, with SS Diamond Strap; $2695 Deco Glamour, head only; $200 White Alligator Strap

ABOUT THE PIECE: The Deco style is one of the top seller’s for MICHELE. The Deco Glamour just seems like a perfect match for me, right? Bringing together two of my favorites, MICHELE & Glamour. This month I’ll be pairing this watch head with a variety of straps from my strap wardrobe to showcase how changing the strap on your watch can change not just the look of the watch but often the look of the outfit as well. Today I paired it with the White Alligator Strap.

SCARF: Vintage

ABOUT THE PIECE: I picked this red, white and blue scarf up at a vintage store a couple of years ago for just $4. Though I look at it all the time and think it is super cute, this was the first time I actually ever wore it.

SHOES: Calvin Klein

ABOUT THE PIECE: Picked up these great navy and white shoes back in May at the Ross across from The Grove in LA. They often have great designer pieces on deep discount. This classic pair of shoes was just $31.99.

HANDBAG: Roberta di Camerino Bagonghi

ABOUT THE PIECE: One of the best deals I have gotten yet. I purchased this bag at the Heroes and Handbags event in Dallas this Spring. Might I mention that is an awesome event and I strongly recommend anyone who likes handbags attend. I didn’t get what a big deal the silent auction was and so I arrived just before it closed and put a bid on this bag because I thought it was cute and it was one of the only bags that hadn’t been bid on. Minutes later they closed the auction and we went into the luncheon. At the end of the event I went to check the silent auction and found I had won this bag. A few months later I looked it up online to find out more about it and found out it worth more than $2,000. Not only did I get an amazing deal, the $300 I paid for the bag went to a great charity.

Today was a little “Groundhog Day” as I got up and did a repeat of everything I did yesterday morning preparing for the interview with CW33 though everything went off without a hitch today. Arrived at The Ashton to stage our interview “closet” at 11 and had everything ready to go with time to spare. Many blessings to the angels at The Ashton for letting us use their space in their awesome facility. The Ashton will probably always feel like home to me. We spent two and a half hours filming and had a great time. Thanks to LeeAnne Locken for making a cameo and to Jo Trizila my awesome PR guru for arranging the interview and of course to Caroline for all her help getting the staging done so quickly. After many outfits changes and endless great shots for the story we finally parted ways and took a quick trip down to Paradise Bakery. Wow, the customer service there was awesome. Many props to Sammy and staff for a wonderful experience. At the end of the shoot we got the good news that ran a story on “The Little Black Dress Experiment,” read it here. Trying to beat the storm home I made just one quick stop at my favorite used bookstore, Roma’s Books to pick up a copy of Disney’s Cinderella to read at the “Book Nook” at the “Mayor’s Back to School Fair” tomorrow. I read right before Mayor Leppert J Going to read myself a bedtime story and call it a night. Tomorrow is another big day with the “Book Nook” and an interview with Channel 8. Looking forward to it!!!

What I love about this look you’re doing is how simple it is by the number of total pieces you are wearing, yet how classic it becomes. Sometimes I/we forget that keeping something simple by pulling in 1 signature piece (your vintage scarf, in this outfit) really can be powerful (in an amazing and beautiful way!). Love it!

Charity auctions can be so exciting because you often see many unusual things–those cowgirl boots were just awesome–would have had to search to find any like those. Never know what treasure you will find.

Changing the scarf and purse color with this outfit really shows how different simple changes can make an outfit totally different.
