Styling Spring Runway Trends. At Target.

The good folks at Good Morning Texas have invited me to present a weekly segment on styling on a budget. Though “budget” is very open to interpretation for our purposes we’ll say about $100 or less. For my first segment I am doing a special feature on styling the Spring Runway trends, at Target. You’ll be amazed to know nothing cost more than $40 and most looks were under $100 for the complete look.

Today’s Good Morning Texas segment has been one of the most fun to plan and also one of the most challenging. The fun part had to do with the styling while the “challenging” part just had to do with the road blocks of everyday life that we all have to deal with. After returning home about 7PM last night— from doing my “pull” at Target— I prepared dinner for the family and got to enjoy about 10 minutes of the fire alarm going off for who knows why…no I did not burn the dinner. Then just as I started laying out the clothes for the sement my son came in to tell me “you need to see something in my bathroom,” …where upon inspection I found the toilet flooding the bathroom. Umm…if the toilet is flooding scream “HELP” don’t casually saunter in to let me know there is something to take a look at. I can’t even begin to describe that mess but let’s just say by about 9PM I was resuming the styling for the show only to randomly have a roll of tape catch on my lip and spilt it open. Seriously!!! I am not even sure how that happened. All this to say, I truly hope you love the fun looks I styled for the show and enjoy the segment as I did because I’ll admit there was a point where curling up under the covers with a good book was looking REALLY appealing.

If you receive “The Book” from Neiman Marcus or the seasonal catalog from Nordstrom many of these looks and trends might sound familiar because shockingly Target presents a very similar product and very similar trends to even the pricier department stores. On this note, if you want style inspiration and don’t trust yourself to peruse the company website or step foot in Neiman Marcus I highly suggest signing up for their mailing list. Their catalog rarely disappoints, though I warn you, it often incites unparralleled desire for amazing— yet obscenely priced— pieces. I love the synopsis Ken Downing did on the trends for Spring. He has some of the same observations but then again he went to some of the same runway shows last Spring…LOL!

As we start into what I call “Transition Season”…where Winter is bidding it’s goodbyes but Spring has not yet arrived I wanted to give you the heads up on the trends you can expect for Spring and give you some examples of ways to styles these fun new looks.

Here is the short list of what is “HOT FOR SPRING:”

DENIM: this is music to my ears. I could live in denim, as it is, so tell me it’s on-trend and I am all about being trendy. Though this season you’ll see denim in a lot more than just jeans.

CRISP WHITE SHIRTS: this is a carry over from Fall and thank goodness it’s a staple in most of our closets…if you don’t have one, go out and buy two today.

BLUE: This trend was big for Spring in 2005 and it’s back. Whether it’s navy, robin’s egg blue or cerulean, blue is “in” in a big way.

WEDGES: For those of you who are always looking for a few extra inches, yippee!!! And for the tall gals (like me) when you’re this tall and few more inches can’t possibly hurt. And I love the cork wedges, super comfy and your feet will love you for the extra cushy padding.

A STYLISH TRENCH: Whether you prefer the classic tan styling or want to stand out in a bright red or bright green, a great trench is a staple for every wardrobe.

NEUTRAL HEEL: Whether it’s a sandal or a closed toe, a great neutral heel will get you thru the season…just make sure it is comfortable.

A GREAT HANDBAG: You’ll have to tune in to a future segment to hear my take on buying a great bag on a budget.

COLOR: Think bright, think bold. Wear it all, just not at once.

PATTERN: The more pattern the better, just keep to one at a time.

STATEMENT JEWELRY: This Fall trend is holding strong. Stacked bracelets, layered necklaces, big rings. Play “dress-up.”

DRAPING: More good news. Draping is in. Who doesn’t love a style that hides many flaws and is comfortable all at the same time?

So basically you take the “staples to any wardrobe” list, add a bit of color and some pattern and you are on-trend. Who planned things this season and can they plan every season because this is fashion made simple. Here is the overview of the looks shown.
